Acupuncture Case Study: "Postnasal drip and neck/shoulder stiffness that have persisted since childhood" (Kiyosumi-Shirakawa)

The patient has experienced postnasal drip since childhood, with symptoms being particularly severe upon waking in the morning and in the evening. There is a constant feeling of mucus flowing down the throat, and the symptoms rarely completely disappear, causing daily discomfort. B-spot therapy was started around September of last year, and the patient has received treatment approximately once every 2-3 weeks for over 10 sessions, but the postnasal drip symptoms persist. However, nasal airflow has improved with B-spot therapy. During the initial examination, palpation revealed discomfort during forward, backward, and lateral flexion of the neck, and tension in the trapezius muscle was observed.

Treatment and progress

During the first treatment, acupuncture was performed on points between the shoulder blades, on the shoulders, and on the arms. After the treatment, the patient reported a reduction in neck and shoulder stiffness and overall relief. Subsequent treatments followed the same approach. With each subsequent treatment, the sensation of postnasal drip, where mucus flows down the throat, decreased. After two treatments, the symptoms improved significantly, and no recurrence of symptoms or the appearance of new symptoms was observed during the treatment period.

Summary

For postnasal drip that had persisted since childhood, acupuncture treatment was performed on acupoints between the scapulae, shoulders, and arms. Although B-spot therapy had been continued, the symptoms of postnasal drip remained, but improvement was seen by relieving muscle tension around the neck and shoulders. After two treatments, the sensation of postnasal drip decreased, and daily discomfort was also reduced. In this case, it is suggested that muscle tension around the neck and shoulders may have been involved in the symptoms of postnasal drip, and it is thought that relieving muscle tension through acupuncture treatment was effective.
