Acupuncture case study: "Headaches that, in severe cases, cause nausea and dizziness" (Kiyosumi-Shirakawa)

A woman in her 40s. She had been experiencing neck and shoulder stiffness for quite some time, particularly on the right side of her neck and shoulder. She noticed that she was also experiencing headaches, and at times, severe headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Her symptoms tended to worsen when she was busy at work. Upon initial examination, palpation revealed tension at the insertion point of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and clear stiffness extending from the right side of her occipital region to her shoulder. These symptoms were interfering with her daily life, making it difficult for her to concentrate at work and causing her to want to rest even on her days off.

Treatment and progress

During the first session, acupuncture was performed on pressure points in the hands and feet. After the treatment, the patient felt refreshed. From the second session onward, the patient reported feeling dullness in the lower back, so the treatment was carried out while also considering the balance of the lower back and buttocks. With each subsequent treatment, the symptoms improved, and after two sessions, not only were dizziness and nausea gone, but headaches also disappeared. The patient has continued to visit the clinic to prevent recurrence. There was no relapse of symptoms or the appearance of new symptoms during the treatment period.

Summary

In this case, the patient presented with headaches, dizziness, and nausea associated with chronic right-sided neck and shoulder stiffness. Treatment focused on acupressure points on the hands and feet. Symptom reduction was achieved after the first treatment, and subsequent treatments considered the balance of the lower back and buttocks, resulting in the disappearance of major symptoms after only two sessions. While work-related stress and fatigue were likely contributing factors to the worsening of symptoms, regular treatments have prevented recurrence. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of treating acupressure points in distant areas of the body for accompanying symptoms caused by neck and shoulder stiffness.
