Doctor's diagnosis: Tennis elbow

symptom

Acupuncture case study: "Pain when twisting, gripping, or lifting" (Meitetsu Sakurai Station/Anjo City, Aichi Prefecture)

The symptoms appeared about two months ago, coinciding with a particularly busy period at work. The pain was felt deep in the elbow, and was especially severe with twisting and gripping motions. Lifting objects with the palm facing down was also painful. I couldn't even lift a bottle cap. The symptoms only appeared during movement; I felt no pain at rest. Because my job involves a lot of hand use, it became difficult to work with my right hand, and I was forced to use my left hand instead. I had an X-ray at an orthopedic clinic and was diagnosed with suspected tennis elbow.

Treatment and progress

During the initial examination, muscle tension was observed in the forearms and back. In the first treatment, acupuncture was performed on points in the back, shoulder blades, and forearms. Muscle tension eased before and after the first and second treatments, but no significant changes were observed in movement. The second treatment followed the same approach as the first, with acupuncture being performed on points in the back, shoulder blades, and forearms. After the second treatment, the patient went to work and felt that their symptoms had improved slightly. After the fourth treatment, they were able to work almost as before. No relapse of symptoms or the appearance of new symptoms were observed during the treatment period.

Summary

This case involves acupuncture treatment for suspected tennis elbow, believed to be caused by excessive hand use at work. While no significant change was observed after the first treatment, an improvement in symptoms was observed after the second treatment. It is believed that continuous acupuncture treatment of the back, shoulder blades, and forearms relieved muscle tension around the elbow, leading to symptom reduction. Further improvement can be expected with continued treatment.
