Acupuncture case study: "Pain on the outer side of the patella that worsens after exercise" (Higashi-Muroran Station)

A teenage girl developed pain in her left knee after volleyball practice. She experienced a dull, heavy pain on the outer side of her left kneecap, which tended to worsen after exercise. She consulted an orthopedic surgeon and was diagnosed with suspected jumper's knee. She experienced pain while walking and during club activities, and was concerned about the condition worsening as a competition was approaching.

Treatment and progress

Initial examination revealed pain during knee flexion, as well as limitations in ankle dorsiflexion and hip external rotation. Acupuncture on points in the buttocks, behind the knee, and lower back resulted in the disappearance of pain during movement and improvement in tenderness.

Summary

In this case, treatment for knee joint pain focused not only on the painful area but also on limitations in the range of motion of the hip and ankle joints. As a result, the symptoms improved after the first treatment. This suggests that for knee joint pain, a treatment approach that considers the functional relationships of the entire lower limb, rather than just the knee joint in isolation, is effective.
