symptom

Acupuncture case study: "A tight, stiff pain in the armpit and front, along with insomnia" (Karasuma Oike Station, Kyoto Municipal Subway)

The patient presented with a chief complaint of a tight, pulling pain extending from the left armpit to the front. She had experienced discomfort around her armpit since around the summer of 2024, but initially the symptoms were not noticeable. Recently, she has been experiencing continuous pain even when at rest. She sometimes wakes up at night due to the pain and also has shoulder stiffness. She had consulted an internal medicine specialist and undergone a medical examination, but no problems were found. She also underwent a breast cancer screening, but no abnormalities were found.

Treatment and progress

Upon initial examination, palpation revealed good shoulder joint movement, but induration was found in the upper shoulder and below the clavicle. Tension was also observed along the flank and rib cage. The treatment involved acupuncture on points in the arm and lower leg to relieve tension around the shoulder and flank. After the first treatment, the flank pain and shoulder stiffness were reduced. At the follow-up visit one week later, the flank pain had disappeared since the initial treatment, so the same treatment was performed and the treatment was concluded.

Summary

For a patient with axillary pain accompanied by nocturnal pain, treatment focused on muscle tension in the upper and lateral shoulders. Acupuncture on points in the arm and lower leg provided immediate relief, and the patient remained symptom-free thereafter. In this case, it is believed that a systemic approach, not just a local one, was effective in treating axillary pain.
