Acupuncture case study: "Ankle sprain and pain requiring crutches" (Higashi-Muroran Station)

During cheerleading practice, she fell and sprained her left ankle when another athlete's foot got caught. Immediately after the injury, she experienced such severe pain that she could not move on her own and went to the emergency room. She was diagnosed with an ankle sprain and instructed to use crutches. She experienced pain mainly in the anterior talofibular ligament, and the pain was particularly severe when bearing weight or standing up. She was unable to put weight on her ankle in daily life and had difficulty moving without crutches.

Treatment and progress

During the initial treatment, acupuncture was performed on points around the fibula and on the little finger. After the treatment, the tenderness disappeared, and the pain during movement was alleviated, allowing the patient to walk without crutches. In the second treatment, four days later, the focus was on the pain during inversion and plantarflexion, and acupuncture was performed again on points around the fibula, after which that pain also disappeared.

Summary

Acupuncture treatment, initiated five days after the injury, resulted in remarkable improvement in a severe ankle sprain requiring crutches after only two sessions. Treatment of acupoints around the fibula was particularly effective, contributing to the alleviation of pain during weight-bearing and movement. This suggests that early acupuncture treatment for acute ankle sprains is an effective approach for pain relief and functional recovery.
