symptom

Acupuncture case study: "Runny nose and nasal congestion that prevents sleep at night" (Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture)

The symptoms involve nasal congestion and a runny nose that occurs at night. Specifically, both nostrils become blocked, and the runny nose is constant, making it impossible to put tissues down. The symptoms mainly appear after 9 PM, and there are almost no problems during the day, so it does not affect daily life or work. However, the nighttime symptoms sometimes make it difficult to sleep, reducing the quality of sleep. The symptoms started two weeks ago, and there has been no noticeable improvement. I have not received any diagnosis or treatment from a medical institution so far, and I do not have any other particular health concerns related to this condition.

Treatment and progress

During the initial physical examination, a localized area of coldness was identified in the neck. Induration was also present, so acupuncture was performed on specific points in the hand to address the coldness, and needles were used on the corresponding points in the indurated area. After the first treatment, the patient reported an improvement in nighttime symptoms, no longer needing tissues. Since then, nighttime nasal congestion and runny nose have not recurred, and the patient is reported feeling comfortable.

Summary

In a case of nighttime nasal congestion and persistent runny nose, treatment targeting coldness and hardened areas in the neck resulted in improvement after the first treatment. Acupuncture on points in the hands, which address coldness, is considered effective. The patient has not experienced a recurrence of symptoms since then, and their sleep quality has improved. This case suggests that treatment of appropriate acupoints may be effective for nasal symptoms related to coldness. Further consideration of treatments aimed at improving coldness is worthwhile for similar symptoms in the future.
