Pain in the back of the left knee and a throbbing sensation in the shin when bending the knee.
symptom
The patient complained of pain in her left knee starting a month ago, particularly when bending her knee from an extended position. She experienced throbbing pain on the outside of her shin while walking, and difficulty getting up from bed or standing up from the ground. An X-ray at an orthopedic clinic revealed some slight deformation of the bone, but it was deemed age-appropriate and not particularly serious. She was prescribed topical patches and medication to relieve nerve pain (Tallige), but her symptoms did not improve. She also occasionally experienced a dull, heavy pain radiating from her thigh to her buttocks.

Treatment and progress
Upon initial examination, there was no heat around the knee, but muscle tension was found around the left side of the lumbar vertebrae from the 1st to the 4th. In the first treatment, acupuncture was performed on the L1 and L3 lumbar vertebrae, but the relief was temporary and the symptoms returned the next day. In subsequent treatments, acupuncture was performed on the L1 and L4 lumbar vertebrae with the aim of relieving tension behind the knee and reducing pain on the outside of the shin. After the third treatment, the patient reported that it was easier to get out of bed at night, and after the fourth treatment, the pain had disappeared by about 80%. The patient walked for long periods during a three-day, two-night trip, but the pain did not recur as it had before treatment began. After the fifth treatment, the problems with walking were completely resolved, and the pain behind the knee, on the outside of the shin, and the heaviness and dullness in the thigh had also disappeared.

Summary
We suspected that the knee pain was likely influenced by muscle tension around the lumbar spine, and after focusing acupuncture treatment on the lumbar region, the symptoms improved significantly. In particular, the pain behind the knee and on the outside of the shin, as well as the heaviness and dullness in the thigh, disappeared, and it was confirmed that daily activities became smoother. There was no recurrence of symptoms, and the good condition has been maintained even after the trip. This suggests that treatment to relieve tension around the lumbar spine is effective in improving knee pain and related symptoms.
